BOLD Council Year in Review

By all accounts, the BOLD Council had an incredibly successful first year. A Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary of the Council were recruited by the College, and these individuals recruited the BOLD Council members. The BOLD Council accomplished a number of goals between October 2009 and April 2010, including:

Developed a comprehensive Operations Document/Strategic Plan for Fall 2009 – Spring 2012
Encouraged the College to develop an “opt out” policy for email list servs, which will go into effect Spring 2010
Encouraged the College to adopt an easier process for giving online (monthly withdrawals)
With Career Development, created a job description for the Alumni Career Outreach Assistant (COA) program
Worked with College’s LinkedIn group to review LinkedIn sub-groups and promote the Gettysburg College Professional Network (GCPN) to other alumni
Conducted preliminary outreach to young alumni to gain perspective about the alumni website and communications vehicles
Identified and documented volunteer resources and opportunities for eventual inclusion on the alumni/BOLD website
Identified, supported and suggested paperless communication approaches aimed at BOLD alumni
Recruited BOLD alumni volunteers to serve as representatives to 15 regional alumni clubs
Created a quarterly Engagement Newsletter for BOLD volunteers
Planned and executed 5 regional BOLD Kick Off events

Gettysburg College iPhone App

Have you ever wanted to take Gettysburg College with you everywhere that you go? If you have an iPhone or iTouch, there's an app for that.

Last week the college announced the release of the application, which can be downloaded for free at www.gettysburg.edu/app. The design was put together with external audiences in mind, like prospective students, alumni and families. As a young alum, an iPhone app comes in handy whether you want to find out the latest news on campus or get in contact with a certain professor who found out you were on campus and didn't stop by his office (sorry, Dr. Hiraizumi!).

There's a lot more to this app than campus news and directories, though. Check out the hi-res photo album and videos from campus, scroll an interactive campus map, follow your favorite Bullets sports team, and (say you're planning a trip back to campus soon) you can easily get contact information for area hotels and restaurants. You can even find out what your favorite campus dining spot is serving these days - check out the newest location, The Dive, in the new Center for Athletic Recreation and Fitness.

Even if you don't have the iPhone or iTouch to get the app, tell your friends or mention it if you have the chance to volunteer at an Admissions College Fair in your area. If you have a reunion coming up soon - Class of 2000 and 2005, that's you - save yourself some hassle and check it out for hotel and dinner reservations. Otherwise, you can see what it's all about from the visitor section of the website at http://www.gettysburg.edu/visiting_gettysburg/getting_togettysburg/iphone-app.dot.

Networking Event in Philly

Gettysburg College cordially invites BOLD Alumni to a unique Networking Event in Philadelphia on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 1600 Market Street (Center Hall of the PNC Bldg.), 6:00-9:00 p.m. The event will feature not only Gettysburgians, but also alumni from Amherst, Hamilton, Middlebury and Trinity, along with fellow Centennial Conference schools Dickinson, F&M, McDaniel, Ursinus and Washington. What makes this special is that it will feature "speed networking," in which you'll meet with at least 12 different people for six minutes each, and the folks you meet with are based on your stated profession-type preferences.

The cost of the event is $31 and includes appetizers and soft drinks. You will receive a personalized schedule when you arrive at the door on Nov. 11. To register by the Nov. 5 deadline, send an e-mail to event organizer Craig Turet at psn2008@yahoo.com, and include the following information: Name, E-mail, Company & Position, Profession/Industry, Gettysburg College Class.

BOLD Kick-Off

Thanks to everyone who "Came Home" for Homecoming Weekend 2009. We set an all-time attendance record and despite the rainy weather, people were in great spirits. Of the over 1300 alums who came back to the 'Burg, more than half of them were BOLD alumni. We were so excited to see such a great turnout.

The BOLD Council also held their first meeting over Homecoming Weekend. The Council had many great ideas about things they would like to try. You will be hearing more about the Council's initiatives over the next year. If you have any ideas you would like to contribute please feel free to e-mail us at bold@gettysburg.edu.

The weekend was capped off by the BOLD Kick-Off in the Attic. Over 450 alumni, friends and current students came out to help us celebrate the start of the BOLD young alumni program. Look for BOLD Kick-Off events in your city over the next year as we take this event on the road.

"Come Home" for Homecoming 2009

Homecoming 2009 (October 16-18) promises to be yet another exciting weekend at Gettysburg this fall. Join us on campus for the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Bullets Marching Band, the 25th Anniversary of Kline Theatre, and a Swimmer's Reunion and "last swim" in the CUB Pool. And don't forget to attend the BOLD Kick-Off event in the Attic on Saturday night! Register online today!

...To the BOLD Kick-Off!

The BOLD program will officially kick-off during Homecoming Weekend, October 16-18, 2009. We invite everyone back to return to campus for the festivities. Homecoming Weekend will offer events for everyone, capped off by the BOLD Kick-Off on Saturday night in the Attic. The event will include a DJ, food, drinks and giveaways.

You will be receiving more information in the mail, but please take a moment to visit the Homecoming website to view a full schedule of events.

If you aren’t able to make it back to the Burg for Homecoming Weekend, BOLD will be having regional kick-off events throughout the next year. We hope to see you at these events. If you have ideas for a BOLD event in your area, please fill out the suggestions form.

Update on BOLD Activities

We’ve had an incredible response from young alumni about the BOLD initiative. To date, over 50 young alumni have volunteered for the program, and many more are sending ideas and suggestions for moving the program forward in a way that works for you.

Hi, my name is Jenn and I graduated from Gettysburg just a few short weeks ago. As a very recent grad, I’m very excited to have the BOLD program to help me keep in touch with my classmates, network with other alumni and to stay connected to Gettysburg as a whole. It’s especially nice for me that so many of these connections can be maintained online because I am leaving the country for about a year this coming Fall. I’ve accepted a position teaching English in the French school system, living about an hour North of Paris. But don’t worry - Gettysburg isn’t getting rid of me that easily. That’s one of the reasons I chose to get involved with BOLD, KARE, and to be a Class Agent. Though I want to take some time away (very far away it seems), I don’t want to "leave" Gettysburg completely. I’m really looking forward to the events, networking and connections this program will facilitate, and I can’t wait to read the blog updates to keep in touch with campus. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even connect with some Gburg alums in France!

This year promises to be an exciting one as we launch a new initiative for Gettysburg's young alumni - the Burgians of the Last Decade (BOLD). Through this blog and the BOLD website, you'll find information about BOLD-related activities across the country, read college updates, and have a chance to gather and share ideas with fellow young alumni - things like recipes, workouts, travel ideas, job and house hunting tips, and much more! I encourage you to visit and post often!

If you want to be involved or have any ideas to share, please email the BOLD Council at bold@gettysburg.edu. I look forward to your thoughts and feedback about what the program is doing, activities to plan, and anything else that's on your mind as a young alum.

BOLD is Here for You!

Gettysburg College is working to provide young alumni services important to you. The formation of the Burgians of the Last Decade (BOLD) is a direct result of interested young alumni developing such a program.

The BOLD program exists to:

Encourage and maintain the relationship between young alumni and the College through volunteer activities and philanthropic support.
Educate and encourage young alumni to participate by giving back financially to the College building on the Senior Class Gift Campaign.
Advocate the needs and concerns of young alumni.
Implement young alumni programming that enhances career and social networking opportunities while cultivating new volunteer leaders.
Assist young alumni in transition from student to graduate instilling the notion "Gettysburgians for Life."

This blog will provide new information from advice on moving, good recipes, fitness tips, and other information pertinent to you. All the information is for young alumni written by young alumni.

The BOLD Council is responsible for this content and the initiatives of the BOLD program. The Council is always looking for news, information, ideas and interested participants. Please send any ideas, questions, or your name if interested in joining the Council to BOLD@gettysburg.edu.

We hope this provides you with a better forum to stay connected and informed.
